Our 4–5 Year Old Pre-Prep Program (School Readiness)

At K4Kids, our Pre-Prep Program for 4–5 year olds is designed to gently and confidently prepare children for the transition to school—academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. We understand that school readiness is about much more than writing names or recognising numbers; it’s about building the skills, confidence, and resilience children need to thrive in a structured school environment. Guided by the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF) and the principles of Belonging, Being, and Becoming, our play-based and inquiry-led program supports every child as a capable and confident learner.

Education through play!

Our mission is to create a nurturing, inclusive, and dynamic environment where every child feels a deep sense of Belonging, Being, and Becoming.

We are committed to fostering a love of learning through play-based inquiry and ensuring each child’s unique identity, needs, and potential are celebrated.

1. Early Literacy and Numeracy Foundations

We build on children’s natural interest in words, letters, numbers, and patterns through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

  • Pre-literacy Skills: Letter recognition, phonics, storytelling, rhyming games, and name writing.
  • Pre-numeracy Skills: Counting, patterning, sorting, measuring, and number recognition through play-based activities.
  • Language-rich Environments: Daily story time, group discussions, and opportunities for children to express their thoughts and ideas.

2. Social and Emotional Development

We foster emotional intelligence, resilience, and confidence—essential for navigating the social world of school.

  • Self-Regulation: Learning how to manage emotions, take turns, wait patiently, and adapt to change.
  • Confidence Building: Opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, and take leadership roles in group settings.
  • Friendship Skills: Practising cooperation, empathy, and navigating friendships with support from caring educators.

Children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and daily routines, building the self-help skills that promote confidence at school.

  • Self-Care: Managing personal belongings, dressing independently, and following routines.
  • Decision-Making: Choosing activities, setting personal learning goals, and contributing to group projects.
  • Responsibility: Caring for the learning environment and participating in collaborative tasks.

4. Cognitive and Inquiry-Based Learning

We extend children’s thinking through intentional teaching and child-led investigations that encourage curiosity and deeper learning.

  • Inquiry Projects: Exploring topics of interest through group investigation, critical thinking, and hands-on exploration.
  • Problem-Solving: Encouraging children to hypothesise, experiment, and find solutions through play and discussion.
  • Thinking Skills: Supporting children to ask questions, reflect, and build on ideas collaboratively.
